Membership
This can be on an individual or group basis. Full individual membership is open to all adults and family groups. We are sorry, but we cannot accept juniors unless they are part of a family group.
Established re-enactment units/groups can join on an affiliated unit basis. Affiliated units pay a sub based on their unit membership at the start of the membership year. All members of the unit then become affiliate members of Crown & Empire. Any recruits gained by the unit during the membership year automatically become affiliate members of C&E without any further subscription payable (under normal circumstances). Affiliate members have the same rights as Full members except a vote at the AGM. Any unit or group wishing to take up affiliate membership should contact the membership secretary.
For a nominal fee, simply to cover administration, units may become Associate members of Crown and Empire. This is for units who would like to work with us, but have their own insurance and logistics structure. These memberships are currently by invitation, but if you would like your unit to be considered, please contact the membership secretary - Celia Norris.
Insurance
C&E have full PLI insurance for events and all members are covered by this when taking part in C&E registered events.
What we expect of our members:
Communications
Most are by email, although we will occasionally need to post things. Therefore it is most important that you keep us informed of any changes to contact details especially email addresses
Commitment and Events
There is the necessity to commit, and it is expected that when members commit to an event or specific job they turn up and/or carry out that job. If you have committed to an event or job and the situation changes, members must let us know as soon as possible and not leave it to the last minute.
Where the event demands, members will be required to act as part of a unit and will come under a military organisation. Individual members, not already part of an established unit will be asked to join in with an established unit or group as appropriate for the event. Which unit may change from event to event.
The appointed Unit Commander or another duly appointed responsible person will be responsible for accrediting, or checking the accreditation of, members and/or guests of the unit in whichever arm they portray.
What we offer our members:
We are constantly looking to provide events that our members will enjoy. We have a wide range of interests and periods covered within our membership, so we cannot guarantee that every event will suit everybody, but the intention is that there should be something for everybody in our calendar.
FAQ
How much is membership?
Full Membership for 2021 is £7.50 per person irrespective of age. For riders it is £10. Family memberships are grouped together but there is no special family membership rate.
How long does my membership last?
The membership year runs from January to December. Members will be asked to renew their membership around Christmas time each year, irrespective of when they joined. We are sorry, but with such a low subscription we cannot offer any reductions for part years membership.
Why do I have to provide a photograph?
We issue photo membership cards as advised by The National Association of Re-enactment Societies Ltd (NAReS). We do not insist on photos for members under the age of 14, but they may have one if they wish. In this case, supply of a photo will be deemed permission to use it for Crown & Empire membership purposes.
We are not as picky as the passport people and any reasonable front image is acceptable; we can edit pictures to fit. Photos can be emailed to the membership secretary (preferable .jpeg format). In some cases we can cut photos from facebook profiles as long as they are suitable.
Do I have to provide a photograph every year?
No, photos are only required at the start of the membership as they are scanned and kept for future use, so you DON’T need to send one each year. You may be asked to provide a new photo in future years if your appearance changes a lot (particularly younger members).
Why do I have to complete a questionnaire?
With such a wide period range, we cannot expect everybody to be able to do, or have an interest in doing, every part of the range. By completing the questionnaire, we have an idea of what people want to do and what they can offer. It is as useful to know restricted interest (e.g. you only want to do Napoleonic Promenading events within 5 miles of Doncaster) as to know about wider interests (e.g. will do almost anything). There is no point in us signing up to an event that nobody wants.
Do I have to complete this questionnaire every year?
No, only on first joining. But it would be useful if you could let us know of any changes.
Unit Affiliation
Ideally you need to be a member of a unit that is affiliated to Crown and Empire. This enables us to record who is responsible within a Unit for administrative, Health and Safety and the appication of Crown and Empire rules at an Event. Units can affiliate by contacting admin@crownandempire and then submitting individual membership forms to the Membership Secretary
